Maria Pia is a Senior Legal Advisor with the Legal Policy & Research Unit of the International Bar Association.

She graduated in Law with distinction at “L.U.I.S.S. Guido Carli University” in Rome and completed a Master in Law and Economics at Bologna University, Hamburg University and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research in Mumbai. Maria Pia is completing a Ph.D. in Law and Economics at the Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics. Her research analyses, from an interdisciplinary perspective, anti-bribery certifications in corporate foreign bribery violations.

As Senior Legal Advisor, Maria Pia is responsible for the IBA legal projects in the area of business and human rights, ESG and sustainability. In particular, she is currently leading the IBA work on the European framework on mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence and the IBA Working Group on AI and human rights. Moreover, she is also responsible for the IBA training initiative on business and human rights and she is supporting the IBA multi-faceted project on modern slavery.
Before joining the IBA, she worked as a legal researcher at the Central Bank of Italy and as a consultant for the European Commission, conducting impact assessments and evaluation studies on issues of anti-fraud and anti-corruption.
Maria Pia has participated as speaker at some international and national conferences related to business and human rights, responsible business conduct and law and economics. She is also a guest lecturer on business and human rights at Queen Mary University London, L.L.M. in Transnational Law and Governance in Practice. Maria Pia is an Italian native speaker and she is fluent in English.
