HRIC Position Paper on the National Strategy on Artificial Intelligence

Updated: Apr 19, 2021

HRIC has submitted a Position Paper contributing to the consultation of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development on the ‘Italian Strategy on Artificial Intelligence’ (available only in Italian).

The paper calls for a human-rights based approach to Artificial Intelligence, in which the UNGPs and OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises are the overarching framework. In particular, this contribution has highlighted the important role played by human rights due diligence in identifying, preventing, mitigating and addressing the risks of adverse human rights impact associated with Artificial Intelligence. Finally, the introduction of these principles in the Italian Strategy on Artificial Intelligence would be consistent with the Italian National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights and would lead to greater policy coherence. The document ha been authored by Maria Pia Sacco with the contribution of Giacomo Maria Cremonesi and Beatrice Pesce.
