Italy: Transposition of EU Directive on protection of victims of crimes

Legislative Decree n. 212 of 15 December 2015, implementing EU Directive on protection of victims of crimes entered into force yesterday.

The Decree amendments to the Italian Code of Criminal Procedure, ensuring that persons who have fallen victim of crime are recognised, treated with respect and receive proper protection, support and access to justice. In particular, the new provisions strengthen the rights of victims and their family members to information and improve their participation in criminal proceedings.

Special attention is given to special support and protection for victims of certain crimes, including victims of gender-based violence, due in particular to the high risk of secondary and repeat victimisation, of intimidation and of retaliation.
